The more columns or expressions entered in the GROUP BY clause, the smaller the groups will be. In addition to results, you can also get minimum and maximum values for the results columns. Minimums and maximums are calculated for numeric types, dates, and dates with times. SQL Server allows you to sort the result set based on the ordinal positions of columns that appear in the select list. It is possible to sort the result set by a column that does not appear on the select list. For example, the following statement sorts the customer by the state even though the state column does not appear on the select list.

To prevent the operation from waiting for other transactions to commit, use either the NOWAIT or SKIP LOCKED option. With NOWAIT, the statement reports an error, rather than waiting, if a selected row cannot be locked immediately. With SKIP LOCKED, any selected rows that cannot be immediately locked are skipped.
